how we got here

If you ask us, our story is proof of the invisible string theory. Long before we met, there were a surprising number of connections tying our lives together. Samantha grew up in New Jersey and never imagined she’d end up living in Miami. While her dad is from Miami, it was always a place to visit family, not somewhere she expected to build a life. But when it came time to choose a psychology residency, Miami suddenly felt like the right fit. Her family had moved there when she was in college, and it seemed like a rare opportunity to be close to them again.

What neither of us knew at the time was just how closely our stories were already connected.
Sean and his mother attended the same high school as Samantha’s dad, and later, her brothers. Our grandparents unknowingly shared some of the same neighborhood traditions, including trips to Samantha’s Dad’s bar for burgers. Both of our grandmothers lived just blocks apart. And somehow, years later, we would end up living on the very same street in Miami.

If you know Miami, you know how improbable that really is.

After settling into residency, Samantha reluctantly decided to give the dating apps a try. Sean’s profile immediately stood out: he was funny, seemed genuinely kind, and, at 6’5", was hard to miss. Sean, meanwhile, saw a woman with a huge smile, cowboy boots, and a profile that left him wondering, “How did this girl end up in Miami?”

Knowing Samantha wasn’t much of a texter (an understatement), Sean skipped the pen-pal phase and quickly suggested coffee. The date itself started exactly how you’d expect: Samantha was 25 minutes late. Despite living on the same street as the coffee shop, she somehow decided to drive and then spent what felt like forever looking for parking.

But the moment she walked in and saw Sean stand up and smile, everything changed.

What was supposed to be a casual coffee date turned into an effortless conversation. We talked about everything and nothing, and for the first time, Samantha felt like she didn’t have to carry the conversation.
When the date ended, Sean walked Samantha to her car and casually mentioned that he felt like the luckiest guy in the world. Samantha was fascinated. She had never met someone so genuinely optimistic.

On the drive home, Samantha mentioned that she hated texting and preferred voice notes. About an hour later, Sean sent her a message asking her to dinner that same night.

She said yes.

We’ve basically been going on dates ever since.

One of the most important chapters of our story started with a road trip.

When Samantha matched into her postdoctoral fellowship in Charlotte, we knew we were about to test our relationship with long distance. We packed up a car in Miami, Samantha's dad followed behind in another, and together we made the drive north.

Like any good road trip, we learned a lot about each other along the way. Sean learned that Samantha can perform what feels like an entire Broadway production from the driver's seat, complete with vocals, dramatic storytelling, and a rotating soundtrack. Samantha learned that Sean somehow needs a bathroom break every 30 minutes, but coupled with his impressive game-planning skills, she decided it was a quirk she could live with.

What could have felt overwhelming instead felt exciting. Every flight, every visit, and every countdown to seeing each other again reminded us that we were building something worth the effort. Charlotte started as a temporary stop for Samantha's training, but it quickly became a place that felt like home for both of us.

Patagonia will always hold a special place in our story. Not only was it our first time traveling out of the country together, but it was also one of the most meaningful trips we've ever taken.

We traveled there with Sean's family, surrounded by incredible views, unforgettable adventures, and plenty of time together. While the mountains and landscapes were breathtaking, what made the trip truly special was experiencing them alongside the people we love most.

The trip reminded us how important family is to both of us and how lucky we are to be part of each other's. It gave us the chance to slow down, take it all in, and imagine the future we were building together. Between the adventures, long conversations, and shared memories, Patagonia became more than a destination; it became a chapter in our story that we'll always cherish.

Some of life's biggest milestones don't happen on a mountaintop or during a grand adventure. Sometimes they happen with a stack of paperwork and a set of house keys.

The day we bought our home was the day we officially chose Charlotte, and each other, as our future.

Our house quickly became more than four walls. It's where we've hosted friends and family, celebrated milestones, spent quiet evenings on the couch, played countless games of mahjong, and danced in the kitchen when no one was watching. It's where we've created routines, traditions, and memories that make ordinary days feel special.

Most importantly, it's where we learned that home isn't really a place, it's who you're sharing it with.

If you’ve ever heard Sean tell this story, he’ll probably start by saying that Samantha likes to “fix things in post.” The truth is, though, he got this one exactly right.

As a lifelong extrovert, Samantha always worried that a big public proposal would make her feel she had to perform for everyone around her, rather than simply being present in the moment.
Sean knew that.

After talking through ideas with Samantha’s best friend, he decided on something much more meaningful: home.

One Saturday, Sean told Samantha they were meeting his aunt and uncle for lunch. She got ready and even commented, “I’m in such a good mood today. I don’t know why.”

On the way out the door, Sean suddenly remembered he had forgotten something upstairs. Samantha waited. And waited. Eventually, he asked her to come back inside to help him find what he was looking for.

When she walked through the door, there were flowers, music playing, and Sean waiting for her.
In the living room of the house we’d made our own, Sean got down on one knee and asked Samantha to marry him.

It was private, intimate, and absolutely perfect.

Looking back, Samantha admits there was one clue she should have noticed: Sean never once reminded her that they were running late. Anyone who knows us knows that’s probably the most suspicious part of this entire story.

Thankfully, she said yes.
